Sri Lanka on a budget – Kandy

Kandy is worth a visit if you love temples and shopping! One of the most famous attractions of all of Sri Lanka is found in Kandy. The sacred temple of the tooth. I would see if you really love temples and history then you should definitely visit but it is 20 USD entry. So if you’re someone like me trying to save every nickel and dime to go longer then it might not be the best place to visit. There are plenty of free things to do as well.

Train: 0.80 USD
Taking the train from Ella to Kandy is a must. It is the most beautiful train ride in the country and easily the most beautiful one I’ve ever taken. It’ll take around 8 hours to reach Kandy but the scenery makes hours pass like seconds. If you wanna add some more comfort to your day in the train book 2nd or 1st class. It won’t be much more money but you’ll definitely have to go to the train station 2 days before departure in order to secure yourself a ticket.

Tip: Take 3rd class to save money. The 3rd class train in Sri Lanka is very comfortable it has tables and power plugs inside so you could even unpack your laptop and work or watch a movie.

Food: 0.50 – 1 USD
Kandy being a city is offering a big variety on restaurants and street shops.
Tip:  Eat in local street restaurants, kandy is definitely the place to do that.

Accommodation: Hostel 5 – 15 USD
Kandy is a big place with many options so go around and compare the prices. is not always showing the cheapest deals.
Tip: Here again it is a great option to try some couchsurfing as it is a big enough place to choose your host among many.

Tourist Attraction:

  • Temple of the Sacred Tooth of Buddha
  • Giragama Tea Plantations
  • Botanical Garden
  • The Big Buddha
  • Traditional Sri Lankan Dance
